I’ve been feeling guilty about not updating this diary but I haven’t really got anything to report – at least not on the writing front! I have been so enjoying not having a deadline hanging over me for the first time this year … no dragging myself upstairs every evening to sit at my computer, no staring out of the window wondering how on earth I’m going to fill the next five pages (let alone the next five chapters) – it’s bliss! I don’t think I can be a real writer at all when I enjoy not writing so much.
I haven’t distanced myself entirely from all things Harlequin/Mills & Boon, though. I gave a talk about writing romance to a group of 17-18 year old students last week, and am currently involved in an email loop with other Harlequin Romance/Mills & Boon Tender Romance authors. We’re setting up a website to promote our line and remind those readers who know of how varied our books are, and convince others to find out for themselves that we have moved with the times and that these books aren’t the same as the ones your mother or your granny used to read. It’s been hard to find the perfect image for the home page, but we know that we want one that will convey the sheer, blissful, self-indulgent pleasure of reading, so I’m charged with organising a photo shoot to try and get exactly the feel we want. We’ll be on location in my sitting room in front of the fire, and I’m hoping Walter, a big tabby with enormous paws and a self-satisfied air, can be persuaded to a walk-on part … More news about the launch of the website next month.
In the meantime, I’ve got another talk about writing romance at the end of the month, and lunch in London with my editor next week - more talking about writing (why, how, what, when) rather than actually doing it. The object of my affections accuses me of being a terrible show-off and I think I must be, because talking grandly about what you’re planning to do without the grind of sitting at a computer day after day is absolutely the best bit about being a writer as far as I’m concerned! And it really is an excellent ice-breaker at parties …
Oh, and I suppose I ought to give The Wedding Challenge a plug! It's out this month in the UK, and February in North America. It's another outback book, and Bea, the heroine, is a girl after my own heart!
