Well, I’m glad I made the most of my two lovely, drifty weeks without a deadline glowering on the horizon. On Saturday I made the foolish mistake (or possibly extremely sensible decision) of sitting down and typing out a timetable for the next book (the one inspired by the story not told in Made of Honour) I took out nine days when I’ll be walking round the Isle of Wight in June, and another four next week when my mother, aunt and cousin are visiting for a major birthday celebration, and then was aghast to find out that I was left with precisely 33 (now 32) days in which to write an entire book from scratch. This includes time when I also have to finish a separate major editing project, and prepare a workshop for the RWA conference in San Francisco. Saturday saw a lot of gulping going on, I can tell you … and I made a very brisk start on the rough draft! There’s nothing like a shot of adrenalin every now and then.

Part of me almost wishes I hadn’t realised how little time I had. I could at least have waited until I had finished tidying my study, a job that has been needing to be done for at least five years. Every time I get an edition in a foreign language, I put one on the shelf for a while and chuck the other into a cupboard, but the cupboard has been literally bulging for a very long time now. I finally got around to emailing some libraries, hospitals and language centres to ask if anyone would like some of these books, and in the hope that someone would say yes, got as far as dividing them into different languages. Now my study floor is littered with books, as you can see, and is in a far worse state than before I started. And of course, now I’m in a tizzy because I haven’t got time to sort it out, but I will have to do something about it before next week as this is technically my second spare room and poor Jenny is going to have to sleep in here …
I’m someone who likes a calm, ordered environment, and I don’t function well in mess, in spite of the fact that my desk is usually a jumble of papers, pens, letters, bills, books, tweezers, tippex, emery boards and nail polishes. The piles of books behind me are really bugging me, and I know I won’t be able to settle to the new book until I’ve done something with them. Still, there’s not much more I can do tonight, so it’s back to the rough draft. The target for today is to get to page 20 of the rough draft (that’s about to the end of chapter 5) By the time you read this, I should be well on my way (and if I’m not, there’ll be trouble …) |

| Know just how you feel, having had three days off for the Lincoln Book Festival, a day off settling the dog back in after kennels, and another day off because of son's birthday - meanwhile with revisions burning a hole in my head.

However, I discovered a very interesting article, thanks to Michelle Styles - not on time management but self management. And it's very illuminating (may help you feel calmer, too). It's at http://www.isnare.com/?aid=14483&ca=Self+Help

Good luck with the tidying. (That's my big bugbear!) |

| Thanks for the article reference, Kate. I had a read, and the point about managing yourself rather than time is a good one, I think. The trouble with advice like that, though, is that I read it and think 'I KNOW all this ... I just can't bring myself to do it'. It's like losing weight/taking exercise/eating and drinking sensibly and all the other things I understand perfectly well in theory but can never put into practice. I had great plans to be TTT (trim, taut and terrific) by the time I hit 50, but short of a complete personality transformation, I fear it's not going to happen. Frankly, I'll be lucky if I get the study tidied by then ... yes, the floor is still littered with books, and I'm two days behind on my rough draft. Have resolved to take the article's advice and go easy on myself, though. Step one will be to rewrite the timetable in a way that miraculously puts me ahead of schedule instead of behind. Some people might call it cheating, but I prefer to think of it as giving myself a psychological boost. |

| You're already 1/3 of the way there on the three Ts - you're terrific. :o)

Ah, the exercise thing. We bought Wii Fit and that's been inspiring. But now I have a dilemma: revisions or exercise? Which are more important? (Oh, I hear my ed. Revisions, of course...) |

| If anyone has heard of a self- help group for hoarders like AA, I would love to hear from them. Although I rather consider myself to be an unspecific collector rather than a hoarder, and no book has ever helped me solve the problem - it has only added to the clutter. Your study looks quite tidy to me Jessica, and I'm impressed that your cat can apparently move easily around your books, so you don't need to despair yet. More importantly, is it OK to wish you a happy birthday? |

| How many copies of each of your books do you get? It must be amazing to look at your bookshelf and see your name on so many books! Congratulations on 50 books! |

| Sorry, Helen and Juanita - have only just seen your comments. Not sure if you'll bother coming back here or not, but I didn't want you to think I'd ignored your questions. So, a bit early for birthday wishes, Juanita (my birthday isn't until September) but thank your for the thought! And Helen, in theory I get two copies of each foreign language edition. In practice, I tend to get two from the London office, and at least another two from Harlequin's main office in Canada, so that's already at least three more than I know what to do with. I often get another couple for some reason, and once was sent 48 Spanish copies of Marriage Reunited - which I have just managed to offload onto my cousin who is taking them back to the poor unsuspecting Spanish teacher at the college where she teaches! I have found homes for quite a few of those books that were all over the floor, but not for the Scandinavian languages, Hungarian, Czech, Korean, Hebrew or Afrikaans, all of which are now destined for the dump unless anyone out there would like to take them off my hands ... |
